Dear Toni,

How does one go about finding representation? I find that is a catch 22 really...you can't get work because you don't have representation, but you can't get representation because you haven't done any work.  Many of my friends seem to have found agents/managers without any problem, but most of them aren't being sent out & haven't gotten much work.  I am not in either of the unions, but have done some independent work, student films & have been taking classes & workshops from a number of wonderful teachers.  What would you suggest to someone who wants to work but can't seem to get that foot in the door to get representation?

Dear KaDo:

Great name.  I know how frustrating this acting business can feel like even once you sign with a manager and or an agent.   Oh joy! Then you get to go through the whole process over again with getting into the Unions.  The constant rejection can wear a person down, but do not give up.  Treat yourself with little gifts.  I probably could have owned a country by now but instead I have a closet filled with useless clothes, but they make me feel good.  You are going through all the right motions, but you are not treating acting like a business, which I highly recommend.  Call agents, solicit managers, write to casting directors of your favorite TV shows and Movies and let them know about yourself.  Go online and join some of the casting directories like LA Casting, Academy Players Directory, Actors Access, Now Casting and other online services.  They will email character breakdowns and other online services for TV and Movies. Don’t allow yourself to feel frustrated and victimized.  It happens to everyone at some point, so just take a breath and push forward and remember you deserve the best.

Thank you for taking the time to write.
